I always wanted Brenda Starr’s job. It mattered not that Ms. Starr “Starr Reporter” was a fictional comic book character. I loved what she did. Asking questions, and telling stories. Perhaps it is the Irish in me. I believe a good story beats a good joke every time. And I’d always fancied myself “a natural ” amateur journalist even before I became a real one. So convinced of this and my ability to persuade others to my way of thinking that on my first job interview I offered to work for free, assured that I would ultimately prove myself worthy of a paycheck. Gainful employment did follow. And the enthusiasm for conversations that turned into stories never waned. There is nothing better than discovering fascinating people or ideas and getting on with the job of telling everyone all about them. So, I did. On television, on the radio and in print. A fellow journalist once described me as “the woman who has never had an unspoken thought.” I suspect it was a chastisement, but I didn’t see it that way. The best tales teach and entertain. They inspire “thinking” and conversation long after the story has been heard. And now the woman who has “never had an unspoken thought” has a BLOG. I think Brenda would approve. Oh, and funny how history comes full circle. I don’t get paid for this job either.
